PATIALA: After hospitals, now it's the turn of plastic carry-bag manufacturers of Punjab to face action from Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). The PPCB on Sunday raided 145 plastic carry-bag manufacturing units across the state to check the implementation of mandatory norms.
As per information, during last few days, the board had received complaints that plastic manufacturing units were manufacturing carry bags in violations of the various provisions of the rules.
On Sunday morning the authorities formed 24 teams and sent them to conduct raids throughout the state. The teams were headed by senior engineers and scientists of the board.
"The visit reports of all the 145 units scrutinized, about 115 units were found violating the rules," PPCB chairman K S Pannu said. As per provisions of these rules no person is allowed to manufacture, stock, distribute or sell any carry-bag made of virgin or recycled or compostable plastic which is less then 40 microns in thickness.
Senior officers of PPCB alleged that instead of abiding by the rules, majority of the units were found indulging in manufacturing plastic carry-bags banned by the state government. Punjab government has already banned plastic carry bag which do not meet the provisions of rules from May 1.
